This weekend, it’s 59 years ago since Fiat launched the Nuova Cinquecento, better known as the 500. Until about ten years ago that car was just what it was: a brilliant little motoring concept that had lasted eighteen years (1957 – 1975) due to its ingenuity, practicality and adorability. Then the mighty Fiat concern came up with a retro version, which was indeed a tribute to its predecessor. And history repeated itself, with open roof versions, Abarths, Zagatos and more limited editions then you believed to be possible. So far so good. But then came along the Fiat 500L and the 500X, which looked at least twice the size of the original and made us think of Erwin Wurm’s obese arts project at an alarming scale. And where the old thing still manages to charm the girls like it did 59 years ago, one can wonder what these creatures will do in the future…
