It’s difficult to believe Citroën’s 2CV is 70 years old. Although it made its début at the 1948 Paris Salon, the French people’s car was produced for so long, and in such great numbers, that it has become part of the motoring landscape all round the world. Take a walk through any major town or city in Europe and, chances are, you’ll still find a handful of 2CVs in everyday use.
In the model’s 42 years of production only minor details were changed from those initial 1948 cars. Engines grew in capacity from 375, to 425 and finally 602cc, but otherwise the cars stayed much the same. Proof, surely, that Citroën got it right first time round. In the latest issue of The Automobile, long-term Citroën fanatic Malcolm Bobbitt examines the origins and development of this masterpiece of minimalism. So why not pick up a copy and help celebrate 70 years of flat-twin fun?
