The Fiat X1/9 is a two-seater sportscar designed by Bertone and manufactured by Fiat between 1972 and 1982, before Bertone assumed full production from 1982 until 1989, with subsequent cars badged as the Bertone X1/9. Featuring a transverse mid-mounted engine driving the rear wheels and a lightweight removable targa roof, the X1/9 earned widespread acclaim for its superb balance, agile handling and distinctive Italian styling. Amongst the most desirable later cars is the Versione Speciale, offering an enhanced specification and unique colour combinations.
Purchased new on 4th August 1984 from Marn Garage, Camberley and first registered two days later, this remarkable Versione Speciale is a genuine time-warp example. Finished in the model's exclusive factory colour scheme of two-tone metallic silver over metallic charcoal with contrasting red leather upholstery, it retains its original paintwork, trim and even the factory-applied stickers within the engine bay. The light patina acquired over its forty-two years only serves to reinforce its outstanding originality.
The first owner cherished the car for twenty-four years, covering just 15,203 miles before placing it on SORN in September 2008. Following its emergence from storage in 2021, it was carefully recommissioned with a cambelt replacement together with attention to the fuel pump, starter motor and braking system. Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file containing the original service and maintenance invoices documenting its careful upkeep throughout its life.
Purchased by our vendor in August 2022, the X1/9 was thoroughly inspected after its lengthy period off the road, with any necessary mechanical work completed immediately. Now showing just 16,713 miles, it has been enjoyed on occasional fair-weather outings and stored in controlled conditions during the winter months. Offered with a V5 registration document, an MoT test certificate valid until 6th October 2026 and benefiting from Historic vehicle tax exemption, this beautifully preserved Bertone handles with all the poise and neutrality for which the mid-engined X1/9 has long been admired. A delight to enjoy with the targa roof removed, it is sensibly estimated and represents an increasingly rare opportunity to acquire one of the finest and most original surviving Versione Speciale examples.
