In 1982, Porsche racing sponsors requested that the German automaker’s Exclusiv Manufaktur—sometimes called “Sonderwunsch,” or “Special Wishes”—program create a unique road car that looked like the world-beating Type 935 racer. Using the already-aggressive 911 Turbo as a starting point, the resulting bodywork featured louvered steel front fenders made flush with the hood and fitted with retractable headlamps. The rocker panels were boxed and extended to meet the widened rear quarter panels, which contained new brake-cooling vents with side strakes and an electric fan for additional oil cooling. Wider wheels and tires were fitted at both ends.

It took until 1987 for Porsche to add the so-called Flachbau package to its North America catalogue, giving it the option code M505 (M506 for “rest of world” cars). This came at an extraordinary cost approaching $30,000; consequently, only 148 Turbo Coupes were built for 1988 for the North American market, with a very limited number of additional cars sold worldwide. Simply put, these were exclusive and sought-after cars when new and remain coveted by Porsche collectors today, and well-preserved, low-mileage examples—like this 1988 M505 Coupe—are particularly desirable.

Finished in Black (code A1) over a Linen and Black (code QA) interior, this car was delivered new via Jim Ellish Porsche of Tucker, Georgia. Its accompanying window sticker notes an impressive total price of $97,937, which in addition to the $28,422 M505 package also included an electric sliding sunroof, heated seats, a limited-slip differential, special foil stone guards, a security system, the CD-1 stereo entertainment package with an additional amplifier, a raised-hub steering wheel, and Goodyear tires.

The car remained in Georgia for much of its life, first in the care of its original owner, then his ex-wife following a divorce, and then a third owner who acquired the car in 2017, before it was purchased by the consignor in 2018. It has since been maintained within his collection and serviced as needed, though it has been driven very little—its odometer displayed 2,492 miles at time of cataloguing—and it remains in extremely well-preserved condition overall. An accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity confirms the presence of its numbers-matching engine and gearbox. It is further accompanied by its manuals, tools, and its original window sticker.

No car combines extroverted styling, turbocharged power, and Porsche refinement quite like an original Flachbau. This 1988 M505-package example, with a known history, limited mileage, and excellent condition, is a stellar representation of a rarified set.
