The Mercedes-Benz "Heckflosse" or "Fintail" series helped define the marque's postwar success, combining robust engineering, understated styling, and exceptional durability. Introduced for 1965 as the final evolution of the W111 sedan range, the 230 S represented the most refined six-cylinder Fintail offered to North American buyers, powered by a smooth 2.3-liter inline-six and equipped with numerous comfort and safety improvements. By 1968, however, production was winding down as the new W108 and W109 sedans assumed Mercedes-Benz's flagship role, making final-year examples among the rarest of the model line.

Offered here is a highly original 1968 Mercedes-Benz 230 S, purchased new by a Dr. Hare and finished in elegant Dark Olive over a Parchment MB-Tex interior. Retaining its matching-numbers 2.3-liter inline-six engine, the car is equipped with a column-shifted four-speed automatic transmission and optional power steering. As a final model year example, it benefits from a number of unique details found only on 1968-production Fintails. Notably, it is the only model year fitted with federally mandated side marker lights, while additional updates included a revised steering wheel design, changes to the ignition switch, updated transmission selector arm and handle, and numerous other detail refinements. It was also the first and only year that an emissions-control air pump was fitted to a North American-market Fintail.

The accompanying stamped service book provides remarkable insight into the car's early life. Its first recorded service was completed by Silver Star Motors Ltd. of New Westminster, British Columbia, on 2 January 1968 at just 289 miles. Regular maintenance entries continue through 23 February 1989, when the odometer recorded approximately 126,000 miles, with later services performed by Three Point Motors Ltd. of Victoria, British Columbia. Complementing the service book is a history file containing service records dating back to 1969, documenting decades of careful ownership and maintenance.

Likely remaining Canada since new, the 230 S was imported to the United States in 2021, entering The Patina Collective. Since joining the collection, the ignition system has been discreetly upgraded with an electronic ignition conversion in place of the original points-and-condenser setup.

Today, this highly original 230 S presents a rare opportunity to acquire a final-year Fintail sedan with exceptional documentation. Retaining its matching-numbers drivetrain, original paint, and original interior, the car is accompanied by a stamped service book and history file tracing its care back to 1969. Well-preserved and thoughtfully maintained throughout its life, it represents a truly charming example of the beloved Fintail design.
