A Comet Mystery (Upd. Mercury 404)

Some months ago we were walking in a Canadian forest, when we suddenly spotted these old wrecks. The pickup bed was beyond recognition, at least for us. The blue sedan was easy, we thought. From afar we identified it as an 1966 Ford Comet, made even more easier by the vanished script on the rear fender. We didn't dwell too long as we had heard reports of bear in the vicinity, but back home we started to wonder. Did Ford really make a Comet in 1966? And what was written behind the Comet script... 888? Do help us!
