A three cylinder W-engined mystery (Upd. 1977 the Pelland Mk II Steam Car !)

Michael Ware sends this intriguing mystery photo: "I have recently heard from Brian Jones who is the volunteer archivist at the London Bus Museum, which has recently moved and is now situated within the Brooklands complex. He tells us that amongst a recent donation of bus photographs there were two of a sports car that had not been identified or captioned. He thinks it must be a 3 cylinder engine car." editor: with not too many W-3 engines around it should not take long to ID this racing special. However the engine looks very strange. The cylinders seem to have a very long stroke. Aero engine? Also take a look at the outrageous barrel shaped muffler, or is it a tank filled with gas/hydrogen perhaps? And what is the long piping feeding(?) the car from the right? We don't see a carburettor, we don't see sparkplugs. Highly experimental that's for sure an a true mystery to us as well.
