About Tough to crack #146: 1964/65 Quantum IV Formula "S"

Last Saturday 'Tough to Crack, Puzzle #146" showed a small single-seater vintage Formula race car. Tough for most of you, there were not that many reactions. May be it was because there were not many hints given, may be it was because there were some very interesting events going on in last weekend, like the Bonhams London to Brighton Veteran Car Run.   Lennart Svensson from Sweden recognized the car as a swedish car, mentioned the SAAB Quantum IV and referred to the Wikipedia page. Alan Spencer mentioned SAAB Quantum Formula S (without the IV) and described it as SAAB's attempt to create their own version of Formula Ford or Formula Fee.   Marc van Asseldonk had the name complete as he mentioned 1964/65 Quantum IV Formula "S". He also wrote us that the chassis was designed by Walter Kern, a nuclear physicist at MIT and an enthousiastic amateur Saab racing driver at the time. He wrote also about the Quantum I, that was built in 1959, with a computer-desinged chassis that Kern engineered in his spare time at IBM, and that this might well be the first CAD chassis.    One hint was that the car has front drum brakes and rear discs. Steve Kupferman wrote us "They used the rugged Saab 3-cylinder, two cycle engine and 4-speed transaxle as used on the Saab 96. Engine was moved to the rear and sat on a semi-monocoque chassis. Came with a 3 piece fiberglass body. Most had drums all around and later converted to front disc!"  The winner is without doubt Steve Kupferman! He did not only have the name complete and gave us the most complete information, he was also the first to react.    Congratulations Steve!
