About Tough to Crack Car Puzzle #200: Hino Contessa Sprint 900

One for the books was Tough to Crack Car Puzzle number 200. Not only was it a milestone since we started with the PostWar Puzzle, we also received a decent number of high quality answers.

According to Bart, it was the hint that made it too easy....

The answer:

The car is a Hino Contessa 900 Sprint, license Renault.
After Bart, it was Roger Hermsen who told us a bit more: 'first shown at the 1962 Tokio Motor Show and same year Turin Motor Show, Michelotti styled bodwork, 4 cylinder rear, longitudinaly mounted , Renault inspired, 893 cm3 Nardi tuned Weber carburated, developping 45 hp, and with an announced top speed of 140 km/h, and with the water radiator mounted behind the engine . Weight was 650 kgs.'
Robbie Marenzi also shared an old advert.
Then there was Christoph Hees who told us more about manufacturer Hino ' founded in 1942, is a Japanese company which started with trucks and armored cars. Car production was started with a licensed Renault 4CV in 1953.'

Verner Johnsen told us more about the commercial 'successes': The first Contessa (PC series 1961 - 1964) was never intended for export, but the Sprint was made for export, but none of the very few produced was ever sold outside Japan.'. Ted Wilmarth said that only one car was made and 'Claimed top speed was 87mph that came from a Nardi-tuned 45hp engine producing 5,000rpm with Weber carburetors. It survives today in its original green color at the Hino Auto Plaza in Japan.' but unfortunately he didn't share his source.

Last word was for Steve Kumpferman: 'Period adverts said: The subtlety of lines and contours promises ready speed, comfort and elegance'

Other good answers came from Timo Laitinen, Larry A. Lewis, Smagghe, Heribert Hofner, Fritz Hegemann, Paul Elwell-Sutton, Gerd Klioba and Neil Beadle.

The winner:

Most people had Wikipedia as main source and therefore most answers were more or less the same. But luckily there were some others as well. We declare therefore Verner Johnsen as winner of this week's quiz. He will not only receive the full 5 points in the six months competition sponsored by Hans Compter Rare Cars but also the famous PostWarClassic.com T-shirt. Congratulations Verner. Please send us an email with your size ([email protected]).

We want to thank our friends from Autopuzzles.com for letting us use their Puzzle!
