Yes, last week’s motoring mystery indeed looks a lot like a big version of the Arnolt MG TD – that’s because it is! “It looks like a super-sized version of the Arnolt MG TD coupes that were produced at the same time by Bertone”, wrote regular Alan Spencer, who knew exactly what it was. A Bentley, sure, but not a Mk6 as some of you believed, but a slightly later R-type of 1953. Simon Frazier wrote: “This Bentley was a one off for Stanley ‘Wacky’ Arnolt, exhibited at the 1953 Paris and London Motor shows. The car had silver flasks engraved with his initials. Styling, similar to the MGs, is attributed to either Franco Scaglione or Michelotti.”
Pieter Vos tops that off nicely with the kind of detail we adore: “At the rear of the left front seat there is a compartment for three silver flasks engraved with his initials plus crystal glasses. In the right front seat there is a compartment for his wife’s favourite perfume and other cosmetics supplies. Wacky owned it untill he died at Christmas eve’ in 1963.” Well done, mate. Let us know your size and the fabulous PostWarClassic T-shirt may make it over to you just in time for this year’s Christmas eve’.
