About Tough to Crack Puzzle #99: 1959 Facel Vega Excellence EX1

It seemed so easy, the answers popped in one after another "Facel Vega Excellence...!" Sure & simple, yes! Yet in the few years the four doors Excellence was produced they built three different type; the EX, the EX1 and the EX2. Now it was hard to tell which one it was based on the simple photo we gave you, but at least you could bring up the issue and possibly give your ideas in which direction to look. And several of you took the trouble to do so! Not only the model is quite differently shaped (especially in the rear section). The car also has a different engine. In this case we're talking about the 'Wedge'. To our surprise there was one sender - Simon Frasier - so self assured that we wonder if he has been an earlier owner of the car. This is what he wrote: "1959 Facel Vega Excellence EX1. Designer Jean Daninos, based on extended HK chassis. No centre pillar (unlike Lincolns half pillar), doors latched to floor. Chrysler batch built V8 engines (hemi, 383), mainly auto transmissions. Later models had Dunlop discs. Daninos favoured royalty and celebrity when choosing clients. 145 EX and EX1 were built including 13 RHD and 8 Mk2 versions. Luxurious with Connolly leather, steel dashboard painted to look like wood. Between rear seats a vanity unit with mirror, perfume bottles and a brush and comb and a fold out foot rest on the back of front passenger seat." Congratulations Simon! Please send us your mail address and T-shirt size.

Hope to see you all back for the 5 day stereo Pre & Post-War Quiz developed by Rutger Booy, starting Friday 26 December.
