Don’t think we’ve got a surplus of historic Lamborghinis in Holland. But fact is that at Retromobile (7-11 February) two different auctioneers are selling one 400 GT each – both of them on Dutch plates!
First of them is with RM Sotheby’s and the incredible thing about this particular car is that it has only had one owner since the day it was bought. That’s over 50 years! From the seller’s blurb: “The current owner purchased the 400 GT presented here new in December of 1967 following a visit to the Lamborghini factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese with his son, where they met with Ferruccio Lamborghini himself” (cool provenance here).
The first four years of its life the GT 2+2 was used as a daily driver and accumulated nearly 50,000 kms. Further notes tell us: “The car made a trip back to the factory for a service in 1969, and the owner’s son travelled with it. He made the trip to work as an intern at Lamborghini in an effort to learn the car’s mechanical nuances, allowing him to work on his father’s car personally for any minor service work.” Upon retirement, the owner took it with him to the south of France in 1971 and over 46 years later the odometer still reads under 62,000 kms. It’s still in its original Azzurro Mettallizzato and Nero interior and is estimated to sell at €450- to €500.000.
Could a car with such a provenance be beaten by another? Perhaps. Bonhams is selling another Dutch registered 400 GT that’s slightly earlier but that was only imported to The Low Countries in the 1990s since it was delivered new to California. Colours were Verde (green) with a Tabacco (brown) interior back then. The interior colour was retained but the outside was repainted in black after being restored. The car certainly looks in stunning condition with just over 89,000 kms on the clock, believed to be original, too. Now. The estimate is set at € 520- to 580,000.
We've made up our minds, but may we ask you for your favourite?
