Today is a bit of a special day for everyone who cherishes movie cars in general and the DeLorean DMC-12 in particular. Today’s date was the actual date set in Marty McFly’s time-travelling DeLorean when he took off to the future in the 1989 film Back to the Future II. The supersonic car fastforwarded him 30 years in time, when everything was really futuristic and spacey – 1980s style. The future is here, you may say. Well… Not everything went how Marty and Doc Brown visualised it on the screen (Toyota put them back together for a little promotional video, click here).
The flying car is still not here and not likely to come in the next 30 years either. The hoverboard is, although again it’s not very likely to make it to your doorstep any time soon. But talking to people through a television screen is considered as nothing spectacular these days, as are 3D movies, drones and pairs of glasses giving you all kinds of information – all as predicted in the film.
There are some celebrations by fans and people involved in making the movie today, while several more companies have come up with special products, real like Pepsi or unreal like Universal pictures and, again, Toyota. What a pity the DeLorean Motor Company is no longer with us… Or is it?
