report by Stuart Penketh: Here in Thailand, on December 5th is the Kings Birthday. He is the longest reigning monarch in the world, beating my Queen Elizabeth by some 4 years. He is 83 years old, … it is also Father’s day. This year it also coincided with the Sunday Morning Drive, organized by the Classic Car Club. This one being special, was open to ALL Bangkok clubs, (all 167 of them), to come and celebrate His Majesty’s Birthday, with a tour to his Palace (Chitrlada ). I think we’re also supposed to circumnavigate it three times, to bring good luck.
I arrived at the appointed time, just before 8.00am, thinking I might be amongst the first to arrive, only to find myself No. 51 when I came to register, and by 9.00 am another 20 or 30 cars showed up. They didn’t have the XXL tee shirt, I could have squeezed into, (most of the Thais being of slim stature), so I had to really squeeze into an XL (See if you can spot me in any pictures from the BCCC forum this time pps 9 and 10).
As I mentioned in my last Sunday Morning Drive, there is a lot of American Metal here, and this day was no Exception, in fact so much that I only spotted 3 British, 3 Italian, 4 German, and 1 French car. (see if you can spot more)
We stood while the National Anthem was played, and honoured the king, then it was time to parade. We drove to The Palace with a Police Escort (Motorcycle out-riders), and finally parked outside the palace to rest and recouperate. Then we talked with Members over lunch . A good time was had by all. See more at BangkokClassicCar
