Beetle belle's mountain adventure

Here we have another picture with no context or background information whatsoever, but if you know us you’ll know that we do like to try to make some sense of these things, even if we do sometimes have to rely on total guesswork. We believe the number plate of this Volkswagen to be Austrian while the car itself probably dates from the early 1950s. Are we right there?

It seems that it’s a well-travelled Beetle; how else can we explain the extra lights, horns and badges? It must have covered some miles and seen some interesting places. We can only identify the badges at the bottom as ADAC ones. Do you recognise any more of them? The large centrally-mounted aerial is interesting, too, and so is the pole on the right hand side of the car. Is it for a banner? What else could it be for?

Who’s the girl? We have no idea and she could be anyone from an ordinary tourist to a racing driver. Where was the picture taken? We've drawn another blank. The setting is rather stunning. Could it be the Rocky Mountains? Yosemite? The peaks of Arizona? Perhaps it's more likely to be somewhere closer to home for the Beetle. The Alps? The Dolomites? The Carpathians? Those stone markers may give someone a clue...

I had the same antenna in the middle of the front screen of my 1953 DKW F91 Karmann Kabriolett. I think it was a Hirschmann...

The badge on the left side on the window is of the Großglockner, the highest mountain in Austria. The mountains in the background do not look to me European.

I have an original Brezel Käfer of 1949, with original licence plate like that in the picture, and that type of plates was German immediately after the war, where the two small letters on the left denote the German area under the control of Allied forces, like BR, which should be British Rheinland, and AM could be American Bayern or another German area that starts with 'B'.

I agree with Jochen Ernsting. Back around 1968 I remember reversing my RHD VW in a tight area and unwittingly bumped a post with the rear left fender just enough to dent it. Just ruined my day!!

Looks suspiciously like a movie set.

The mystery around that pole on the passenger side fender is easily resolved:

It‘s to help identify where the outer edge of the car is located, as due to the well rounded silhouette of a Beetle you depend on evaluations.
