Big Bengt theory

Sad days for Sweden’s motor museums. After a tremendous number of VW Beetles was sold in auction when the Pålsboda VW museum closed its doors recently, the Big Bengt museum in Värnamo is now next.

This museum was set up by Bengt Tage Erling Erlandsson, better known as ‘Big Bengt’, who was a great enthusiast of the Wild West. He dedicated a theme park to it, built entirely out of 200,000 telephone poles he took over from Sweden’s national phone company when they had to get rid of these. But Bengt was also a great car enthusiast and opened a motor museum next to his High Chaparal theme park with an eclectic mix of classic cars.

All have to go in a three-day auction on Friday 19 October, Saturday 20th and Sunday 21st. Expect the unexpected here. There is an impressive amount of stationary engines, mopeds, bikes and bumper cars, parts, tractors, helicopers, planes, automobilia, art, toys and furniture. And them there are the cars. Naturally, there are several Volvos and a few Saabs - among them a lovely 1965 Volvo fire truck – but you’ll find cars from any other part in the world. We liked this 1954 Pontiac Star Chief and this 1950 Austin A70 Hampshire to name just two (both below). Or how about a Ford Transit in full 1980s custom car outfit, with a number of prize trophies that has to be seen to be believed!
