A forgotten Can Am treasure?

The Caldwell D7 is an overlooked car in terms of Can Am history. Built by Ray Caldwell’s Autodynamics firm, better known for Formula Vees, the first D7 was built for the 1967 Can Am and USRRC race seasons. Sporting beam axles to maximize road holding, and featuring an aluminum monocoque cockpit, the D7 utilized Chevy V8 power with a ZF transmission to put the power down. The first D7 used a “flipper” wing mounted to the chassis and operated first off of engine oil pressure, later by compressed air. This car was destroyed in testing mid year and a new D7, known as the D7C, crafted for 1968 that settled on more conventional aerodynamics to improve straight line stability. Sam Posey and Brett Lunger drove the D7 and D7C during the 1967 and 1968 Can Am and USRRC Race Series throughout North America, finishing as high as third at Riverside in the spring of 1968 with Sam at the wheel. Today the sole remaining car resides with Sam Posey and remains a true Can Am treasure.
