Celebrating life with Last Rides

You know it’s not easy to survive the coachbuilding business, but one carrozzeria that has managed to continue building their cars well within the 21st century is Huiskamp of The Netherlands. You hadn’t heard of them before? Not too strange perhaps, since they have been specialized for over a decade now in one particular niche of the coachbuilding business you’re not likely to have to deal with while alive: hearses. Huiskamp has been building them since they were horse-drawn carriages up until right now, with anything in between from Cadillac Fleetwoods to Buick Electras, many of them with appropriate dead angles.

For Dutch funeral museum ‘Tot Zover’ (‘Thus Far’ - we are not making this up) it was the reason to open a photo exhibition about all these impressive cars that came to life in Huiskamp’s workshops. They write: “These pictures have been taken by the company’s staff, who clearly have a pride in the cars they build. The love for these lovely shiny vehicles no doubt shines through in them, and they have been photographed as object of desire. Like pin-ups.” They are deadly serious. Fancy having a look yourself now that you still can enjoy life? The exhibition closes its doors on November 2 this year.
