Cheap petrol – good or bad?

You will have noticed while filling up: petrol prices have dropped considerably in the last few weeks (in some markets more then others), which may be good news for self-confessed petrolheads consuming more high-octane fuel then they’d want. At least the need to keep a constant eye on the vacuum gauge; wear socks while driving and keep on rolling in neutral when a traffic light comes in sight is not so very necessary. For those: More good news may be on its way.

On the other hand – economy driving can be fun. The economy run, one of very few motor sports where speed is of minor importance, is almost as old as the industry itself. With Mobilgas organizing them back in the mid-1930s. In America, funnily, where petrol prices weren’t even a shade of those on this side of the world and where cars were as vast and thirsty as this cool ‘56 Rambler Cross Country station wagon – average consumption believed to be almost 20mpg. Oh, it won the run from LA to New York, in case you wondered.
