Earlier this month the news about Nissan to take over the streets of New York reached us. What to think of that? They are still yellow, but gone are the days that Checker’s classic cabs reigned NY. Although the company disappeared only in 2009, the Checker Motors Corporation actually built their last Marathon in 1982 – with the last one being in active service as a taxi in 1999. But there’s light at the end of the tunnel now, as Checker is going to be given a new lease of life.
A press release of today proudly states ‘Checker Motor Cars to manufacture second generation vehicles in the United States’, continuing ‘Two new models combine retro appearance with 21st century automotive technology’. The plans are to build a Sport Pick-up Crossover and an ‘Aerobus A888’-model with four full rows of seating and two extended rearward doors. The new Checker’s full steel frame will carry a ‘Flex-fuel’ V8 with fuel injection or Diesel option, driving the rear wheels. Bodies will be made of composite materials and there are modernities such as LED lights all around, heavy-duty airconditioning and an all-wheel drive option for those harsh winters. Production should commence in late 2018, follow the project here.
