What if you win this year’s New Year’s lottery and want to spend your money on a classic as quickly as you can?
Enter Bonhams, who sell some top guns in a few weeks time in Scottsdale, Arizona. Something as delicate as an ex-works Porsche 550A Spyder with Le Mans and Nürburgring podium heritage may well cross your path there. It is for sale there, for an undisclosed price. ‘Refer to department for estimate’ writes auctioneer Bonhams on its announcement (here).
We have no sense of investments, but dare to guess it could well burn all of your lottery money. So how about spending it on something undoubtedly lots cheaper but least as exciting? A car, that is hardly known but that could give you at least as much fun for your money and should welcome you to any prestigious event?
Ladies and gentlemen: the 1968 Molzon Concept Corsa GT38. A one-off that we honestly hadn't heard of either. Perhaps not too strange. It was built by ex-GM and Chrysler stylist Bill Molzon in the 1960s and then tucked away into his Michigan garage with less than 1,000 miles on the clock for a 44-year sleep.
With a space frame chassis and fibreglass gullwinged body The GT38 weighs less than 550 kgs, and is powered by a tuned Chevrolet Corvair six-cylinder turned 180 degrees and placed behind the seats and mated to a Porsche 911 five-speed gearbox to drive the rear wheels. Molzon’s idea was “acceleration superior to a Corvette with the economy of a Corvair and the handling capabilities of a Lotus.” Reportedly the car is still on its original (1963) tyres, so it may need some attention before sound barrier speeds are tried out once again, but what a little jewel this is! Isn't this even cooler than an ex-works 550 Spyder? Oh, the price? Well... you just ‘Refer to department for estimate’…
