Ferrari prices - the end of innocence?

The amount of Ferraris – or ‘important Ferraris’ as the auction houses prefer to call them – that will be hammered off the coming days is crazy. Bonhams kicks off at Quail Lodge in two days time with no less then 26 cars with the prancing horse logo on the bonnet, 10 of which come from the former Maranello Rosso collection. No doubt the star attraction will be the third lot - a 250 GTO that has been one-family owned for 45 years. It has no reserve and is now rumoured to be able to fetch something between a 25- and 60 million dollar price. That will stir the auction floor for sure, but could it spell the end of innocence in the classic car world? Even the earlier cars like this or this have now estimates that make anything else from the era seem cheap.

Gooding and Company are next, two days later, with 24 vehicles originating from Maranello. And once more prices are expected to be whopping. The most desirable car – in our opinion – is again the earliest one, but there’s no way we could ever afford one now.

UPDATE: 250 GTO sold at 38,115,000 dollars. The market speaks?
