Justin Marozzi is an award-winning journalist and travel writer who is used to treading the path less travelled. He has written books on Libya and Baghdad, and is used to being out of his comfort zone researching in war-torn and dangerous regions. For such a hardened traveller, a 1000-mile blast in an 1950s car shouldn't pose too much of a problem, especially when his mode of transport is a Bristol 405 saloon. Famed for its refinement and finesse, the 405 was Bristol's only foray into the four-door saloon market and garnered instant praise from the motoring press when it was launched in 1955. Marozzi discovered his car by sheer chance, whilst working in Baghdad, and “Succumbing to the mania that comes over you when you're cooped up in a warzone” decided he simply had to have it.

The writer and his automotive companion have shared many miles in his half-decade of ownership, but a recent walking holiday in the Lake District proved a perfect opportunity to blow off the cobwebs and do some proper old fashioned grand touring, Bristol-style. You can read Justin's account of his spirited 1000-mile drive and his enduring love for Frieda the 405 in the November issue of The Automobile, which is out now.
