When in 1955 Mercedes retired from active participation in Formula I, from then on they decided only to take part in rallies. In the late 1950s and early 1960s the 300 SL sports car and the six-cylinder 220 SE and 300 SE saloons were most successful, but especially noteworthy are the achievements of the ladies teams. Driving for Mercedes was the Swedish Ewy Rosqvist-Baroness von Korff (left) who at first teamed with Ursula Wirth. In 1962 they took an outright win at the tough Gran Premio Argentina road race. And in January 1963 they won the Ladies’ Trophy with their Mercedes-Benz 220 SEb at the 32nd Monte Carlo Rally. For 1964 Ewy teamed up with Eva-Maria Falk and achieved another triumph at the 33rd Monte Carlo Rally in the Touring Car 2500cc class again with a 220 SEb. And also that year both ladies finished in third place at the Touring Car Grand Prix of Argentina in a 300 SE. Check this great shot that shows them sliding down from the 1,980-metre-high Cuesta de Miranda.
