After World War II many of the trucks used during the invasion found new jobs in in civilian life. And as they were very tough cars, it is not surprising that many of them are still around. Frequent contributor Karel Vermeer spotted this 6x6 GMC that was built in 1943 and left on the beaches in France after the invasion. After the war it went to a dump in Austria and from there to Holland where in 1949 it was rebuilt as a fire truck. It was fitted with a high-capacity Bean pump, bought in Texas, which was large enough to service three water hoses. Apart from the closed cabin, there’s room on the back for four more firemen. After a useful life, this GMC was restored in 2004.
