Last Sunday’s statue of the Mercedes 300SLR reminded us of the so-called high-speed racing car transporter that was created by Daimler-Benz in 1955. Not an ordinary car transporter, but something really different. Its purpose was to ferry their Silver Arrow racing cars as quickly as possible between factory and racetrack so as to allow the mechanics the maximum amount of time to do their work. It was designed with a modified chassis of the 300S road model, and the powerful engine came from a 300SL. The streamline gave it an odd, yet attractive appearance. Sadly the transporter was never used. After the infamous Le Mans accident in 1955 Mercedes cancelled all racing activities and the high-speed racing car transporter was unceremoniously consigned to the scrap heap.
