800 or 4500 Amphicars made?

The picture is more than wellknown. The Amphicar taking a plunge on a glorious summer day. Powered by a 4-cilinder Triumph Herald engine, the swimmming convertible was developed by German designer Hans Trippel who devoted his whole life to create the perfect amphibious vehicle. The first Amphicar got wet in 1961, so this year it will celebrate its fiftieth birthday. We can tell you about the fun, but better take a dive for yourself via a YouTube video . What remains a mystery so far is how many were made. Georgano mentions in his encyclopedia a total of 800 of which 600 were exported to the USA, but the Amphicar Car Club mentions 4500 of which 3700 went abroad. In general we go with Georgano, but in this case we think the Amphicar Club is correct. What do you think?

Feel like a car dive? When looking for an Amphicar keep in mind that roughly two out of three surviving cars will make your feet very-very wet.
