Diana Dors, often dubbed ‘the British Marilyn Monroe’ even called herself ‘the only sex symbol Britain has produced since Lady Godiva’ And so, when Marilyn had a Cadillac; Diana needed one too. But there was more. Apart from sex symbol, she was a car buff. At the age of 17 Dors bought a six-year old Saoutchik bodied Delahaye - now a well-known car in the scene - without the ability to drive it. At 20, she supposedly took delivery of a new Rolls-Royce. Still, we hadn’t come across Dors in a Maserati, though. Until now. Taken at the 1964 Motor Show, this picture was unveiled by RM Sotheby recently. Dors saw the Maserati Mistral Coupe on display and decided it was just what she needed at the spot. Call it love at first sight - she wasn’t the only actress who fell for Frua’s lines of the ragtop Mistral. The car later made it to Australia but came back to the UK, only to be offered for sale at RM’s Battersea auction last week – just two miles from Earl’s Court where Dors saw it for the first time. This time it sold for £526,400. The late Diana would have loved that.
