Reader Reg Harris contacted us about an article of some time ago. You may remember that plane turned car of June last year: ‘Mystery Motor – The Douglas C47 Truck’. Back then we wrote: ‘We’d love to learn a little more about it. What happened to the plane? What was the base used for the vehicle? Who knows its background?’. Welll… Upon seeing it Reg knew he’d seen it before. Or something like it. He wrote: “I remembered that I had seen a similar vehicle many years ago. However, on re-reading the text of the article , I noticed that this was a recent photo.
“What prompted the search for your article was that at the November 2017 “Wheels of the Century” event held at Redcliffe, Queensland, Australia there was the vehicle that I previously remembered – same colour scheme and the same working organ built into the rear of the vehicle, but in now much better condition.”
“So there are two such vehicles. The one in your article carries a South Australian number plate and, from the wheels, on a different chassis. The other carries a Queensland personalised plate, “VH DAK”. The VH part copies the Australian aircraft registration and the other part abbreviation of “Dakota”. Interesting??” That’s certainly what it is. Trouble is, it now gives us not one but two mystery roadplanes… Somebody will know!
