Has the world gone mad? With a UK classic car dealer allegedly selling a Ferrari at a bizarre amount last weekend it looked like it once more. But while media tumbled over each other to find out who the ‘anonymous buyer’ could be or what exactly he paid for it and what he was going to use it for (don’t ever think this car will come near a track once more), the world of automobile auctions hammered down another break-through.
Days earlier Bonhams broke a price-record but received only a fraction of the attention that the much-hyped GTOs or Type 57s usually get. The reason was simple: someone forked out 17,500 dollars for an Asahi scale model of a’62 Chrysler Imperial. A Japanese toy. Lunacy? I’m tempted to say so, as that price is not far from the real thing in what looks to be a very nice condition, and a nice old project car of the same type can be purchased at a fraction of that.
