Ton van de Rijt sent in some fascinating photographs of a mystery car we'd like to know more about. Like Ton himself. He wrote: "A friend of mine bought a most unusual Mercedes earlier this year and so far we haven't been able to find out more about its background. The car's chassis comes from a 1952 Mercedes-Benz 220 and we are eager to find out who was responsible for the body. Yes, there are similarities to the Lancia B20 Aurelia, but it's certainly not that. All we know is that it was imported from Belgium in 1968. The later (Dutch) history is known, but we wonder about the part previous to that..."
Well, that's a mystery we can only love. The builder certainly seems to have been inspired by Pininfarina's great Lancia Gran Turismo design and we must say it looks like he knew what he was doing. The relatively long wheelbase and upright Mercedes-grille suit it well. Fact is, that combined with MB's everlasting underpinnings, this is a very nice approach of mixing a 1950s car cocktail. Question now is: who knows more about it?
Update: Herman van Oldeneel sent us a picture.
