It’s easy to link American rock culture to American car culture. From Elvis’ Cadillacs to Dennis Wilson’s Corvette and from Neil Young’s Lincoln to Bruce Springsteen’s Corvette. But there is only one man who personifies Detroit iron itself and that’s Bob Seger. Seger was born, raised and still lives in Detroit and performed his greatest live gig there. Together with the Silver Bullet Band he sang “Out in the back seat of my '60 Chevy”, about “Pony cars cruisin' on Woodward Avenue” and about Betty-Lou, who “took the keys to my Cadillac car. Jumped in my kitty and drove off far”. Ah – these are just a few of his lines, drenched with cars and cruising’.
Now. For the first time in years Seger, 69 by now, will be coming up with a new album: Ride Out. Once more it promises old-fashioned car-prose. The first single ‘Detroit Made’ is released and there’s no doubt it’s a tribute to the car culture of Seger’s home city. ‘Got me a deuce and a quarter babe - She will ride you right - Pick you up bout half past nine - We can drive all night’ – Oh yeah!
