Mystery Ferrari, errr Aston.. err (update): Maserati 300S, Carol Shelby, Elkhart Lake, 8 September

We're not as deep in Ferraris as may seem appropiate, so we only came to the feeble presumption that it's probably a late fifties racing car, but then thought it could be an Aston....ooops! Well all Chinese look alike or? Let's not dwell further into the swamp of lacking knowledge. It's just those rearwing airscoop looks Aston-ish. The triangular bonnet openings look familiar yet from what... and the front wings seem to straight for Aston. Well, help us out, we're lost. Google wasn't very helpful this time. And now that we're asking, who is driving Nr 8. And when/where?

(collection Walter Miller)

UPDATE by both Alan Spencer and Gerry Barrett:  The photo is howing Carol Shelby with Masearti 300S chassis 3071 at the Road America 500 mile race at Elkhart Lake , Wisconsin where he finished 2nd to Phil Hill in a Ferrari 315S. Race was held on 8 Sept. 1957. The Maserati had silver fairings over the headlamps for that race with the number 8.
