Chris Dancey responded to our earlier request to dig up memories from 1982, the year when The Automobile magazine started. It looks as if they suffered from a light form of 'Roveritis' in that time. And it seems that 30 years of reading The Automobile have not been a remedy against it...:
"In responce to your request 'The Automobile' Anniversary Edition I have attached a photo taken of our two classic Rovers at the time... this has expanded to four now and two MGs. We still own the two cars in the photograph and both are under restoration at the moment. The cars are Rover P4 75 1959 and Rover P1 10hp 1934 (1935 model).
This photograph was taken on Monday, 31 May 1982, as we entered the 'Bromley Pageant of Motoring' in Kent (editor: photogapher Dave Cussell was there as well in 1982). The car has my wife, mother (no longer with us), two childeren and me driving. We won the ' Home Restoration ' class trophy at this show. The P4's registration no. at the time was 8086 BP (now 1 ROV which I purchased from VL auction), the P1 is RD 6160, Reading issue. This car is undergoing an extensive nut and bolt restoration to concours condition by me, being documented by the RSR in their publication 'Freewheel'. The P4 is having bodywork restoration, repaint and rechrome. We also own a Rover P1 10hp 1935 which is exactly 1000 cars built after RD 6160; this is a barn find, totally original and is the standard which I reference for the first restoration. I intend to restore this car eventually as a tourer special (there were no 10hp tourers built during this season). I also own a Rover P2 10hp Coupe 1938, only 250 of this model were produced in 1938 so it is quite rare. This is an unfinished restoration I purchased last year; the owner was moving and was realistic about not being able to finish it, which I hope to complete this year."
