Scenes from the Underground Soviet Automobile Industry

When visiting the Ilya Sorokin’s Oldtimer Gallery in Moscow there’s no doubt there will be some pretty exotic cars you’ll not see anywhere else. And of course also the usual Russian made cars like Moskvitch or ZAZ. But for the show on September 15-18 they have set aside a special pavilion for ‘home-made’ cars. It began in the 50's and 60's, when the country's shortage of cars prohibited private use. People desperate to buy a car, improvised, and constructed unsightly, low-powered vehicles. On display are examples of such technical work. Some are too horrible to show, but since you asked for it… here they are :-) There’s even one who uses a frying pan as a steering wheel!
