Signed on the nose

It’s only right that when Bonhams holds its annual auction in Monaco, there should be a car with a ‘Monaco-theme’ on offer. And this 'interim' Formula 1 Cooper-Climax does have it all as this Cooperes history includes Maurice Trintignant's victory in the 1958 Monaco Grand Prix. The Cooper-Climax was entered for the race by private owner Rob Walker and was driven by Maurice Trintignant, a veteran French racing driver. After a hectic battle with Mike Hawthorn's Ferrari V6 , Trintignant took the lead and went on to win comfortably – and to receive a tumultuous reception from Prince Rainier and the deliriously partisan French crowd.
Maurice Trintignant was 82 years old when he demonstrated the car at a Monaco Historic event, and signed it affectionately on the nose...
