Sydney before the Opera House

It’s hard to imagine Bennelong Point in Sydney without the signature opera house now. The grand building was opened in 1973. Work started in 1958 and before that time it was the end point of Sydney’s tram lines. Where Sydney’s best-known landmark is situated now, trams were parked during the night. Here is a photo from 1955. This one is slightly older and shows well the tramlines. The new architectural highlight cost 80 million dollars to construct and was designed by Danish architect Jørn Utzon and funded by the profits of the Opera House Lotteries.

Today’s Friday Lady shows it being constructed, and we think the picture must have been taken in 1964 or 1965. The Vauxhall Viva that she so casually parked under an impressive palm tree (now gone to make place for ‘The Spa at Park Hyatt’ we think) must have been one that was assembled in Australia by General Motors-Holden who started doing so in 1964. Vauxhall was not the only manufacturer eager to link the thoroughly modern building to their own product...
