The Automobile: Still Going Strong at 40

The immediate postwar period up to the mid-1960s was the golden age of mass-motoring. After two world wars and periods of austerity, car ownership was more than a mere convenience; it was freedom, romance and glamour.

The Automobile started as a magazine for prewar cars, but it soon expanded to cover this postwar golden age, which has added to its longstanding success. While other old-car magazines may frequently revisit old ground, The Automobile is always publishing new research and the most authoritative articles which comprehensively shed light on postwar motoring from technical, social and aesthetic perspectives.

Combining the best writing with superb design and photography which captures the beauty and excitement of motoring, The Automobile is stronger than ever after 40 years, and such longevity calls for a celebration. There could be nothing better than the 40th Anniversary special issue, in which:

  • Julian Balme goes for a drive in an ultra-exotic, one-of-five Aston Martin DB3S coupé
  • Giles Chapman relates the life of Standard-Triumph stylist Walter Belgrove in unprecedented detail
  • Laurence Pomeroy Jr was The Motor’s charismatic Technical Editor from 1937 to 1958. Well-known for his lucid, erudite and informative writing, Karl Ludvigsen celebrates his life and achievements
  • Martin Buckley evaluates the Lancia Appia, a modern, high-quality and understated berlina perfect for the mature but stylish Italian motorist

They are but a handful of the articles spread across 212 pages. The 40th Anniversary issue can be found in shops priced at £12 or ordered directly from The Automobile, with a special price of £10 for subscribers.
