The Emergency Exit Mystery

Over the years we have seen some strange devices, but in our opinion this one tops the lot. It's the rear door of a 1955 French Renault bus, but what caught our attention was the door lock. What were they thinking? The expression goes 'Safety First' and as far as we know the rear door should also be used as an emergency exit. However, if you lock it from the outside how, we wonder, can this door be opened from the inside? Or did the lock work both ways, as well from the inside as the outside? Any busexperts out there? Please help us solve this mystery!
