The Frank Feeley-designed Lagonda

A Lagonda 2.6-litre drophead coupe is a pretty rare thing and one that remarkably hasn’t seemed to have gone up with the price-rise of recent years (and the more recent drop again?) of its sportier sister cars from Aston Martin.

The similarities are obvious – the DB2s of the same era share much of their famous six-in-line dual overhead cam mechanicals with the posh Lagonda. The Astons have always seemed to be slightly more popular: there were only 510 Lagondas produced between 1948 and 1953. The original DB2 may have made even smaller numbers (411) but then went on to become the DB2/4 (764 built) and the DB2 Mk3 (551), not to mention a whole range of other DBs following these, which were soon to gain real popularity.

1950 Lagonda drophead coupe

The Frank Feeley-designed Lagonda offered for sale in the US by online auctioneer Sonicbidder.com is a four-seater two-door drophead coupe, bodied by Tickford. Just 10 are said to survive but we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that there were actually more. This one was in Scotland before making it over to the other side of the Atlantic and being fully restored there. The painter certainly didn’t seem to forget to put an extra layer of varnish on as it’s been a long time since we 've seen a car shine like this one. The auction ends on 5 October and the car is located in Jackson, Mississippi.
