One of the main attractions at the next Rétromobile Car Show in Paris will be the celebration of the centenary of the birth of Fangio, arguably the greatest racing car driver of the twentieth century. Films of Juan Manuel Fangio’s races can be seen on Plasma screens and several of his legendary racing cars are on show. Among these are the 1951 Alfetta 159 in which Fangio won his first Formula One World Championship. Then there is the 1955 Mercedes W196 that helped him to get his second and third world titles (and nine victories in all). In 1956 Fangio won three titles in the Lancia-Ferrari D50 (pictured above). In 1958, at the age of 47, Fangio passed on the baton. A journalist asked him what he was going to do with all his free time. "I'm going to get my driver’s license”, Fangio answered, which he finally got in 1961! He died of a heart attack on 17 July 1995 in Buenos Aires; three days of national mourning were declared.
