March 3 the 'unrestored and original' ex Dino de Laurentiis 1961 Ferrari 250 GTE will be auctioned.
Especially over the last few years a huge number of unrestored cars has surfaced. And almost without exception they bring good money at auction. We keep hoping these cars come in the hands of true afficionados who do whatever they can to preserve these cars to the best of their knowledge and wallet. However our fear is that many of these buyers are in the 'bragging niche'. They are looking for 'virginal' restoration projects to have good conversation material. Cars that are presented unrestored on the cover of the auction catalogue and that they can show again - restored beyond repair - one or two years later. "Remember the 250 GTE that sold at Bonhams in 2012? Look at me how I restored that car!" Very few people have the wisdom and courage to restore a car along New School like the Italian collector/restorer Lorenzo Marzullo, who will use all possible (and often very costly) techniques to retain what is there. Poor paint? Cracked leather? Old chrome? Clean it, preserve it making use of the very best techniques available. In that way you won't end up with a 'better than new' restoration that looks like a replica.
Don't you agree it's about time somebody should start a knowledge center of techniques available to avoid aggressive restoration methods?
