Wheels at Wanaka 2021

We are receiving positive messages from more and more people around the world about (COVID-proof) classic car events that they have been to. Lets be honest, we are all eager to get out and bring our PreWarCars and PostWarClassics together! Our friends from Auto Restorations earlier already told us about the Ellerslie Classic Car Show. Today they tell us about Wheels at Wanaka and the (completed) projects they had on display.

Auto Restorations

As summer comes to an end in the Southern hemisphere, the last big vehicle show took place in the lakeside town of Wanaka, Central Otago. Wheels at Wanaka is in its 3rd year and runs on alternate years to the international air show Wings over Wanaka. The event is all about wheels, from traction engines, tractors and earthmoving equipment to classic cars. Our friends at Auto Restorations were on site to support the classic car following, with a display featuring 2 recently completed projects and some of the engineering they are performing on current projects.

With the world still in lockdown, and no one allowed to travel again, New Zealand’s gone out and supported something local. Over the 3 days, 24,000 people went through the gates to see over 2,000 vehicles on display.

1927 Amilcar C6 engine

In the engine tent was a 1927 Amilcar C6 engine that the team have been putting together. With the original head and block being beyond use, this engine has been machined in-house from new castings. All the internals, including a new crankshaft, have been manufactured. All that remains is it to be reunited with the chassis and body nearing completion.

1959 Ferrari Testa Rossa & 1966 MGB

The 250TR Ferrari is a representation car, built over 3 years for an NZ customer. Using the engine and transaxle from a 456, the tubular steel chassis is made as close to the original as possible. With a De Dion type rear end, built-in house, and Ferrari 400 top and bottom arms up front to create the suspension. The body is hand-formed alloy over a steel frame. Pictures can be found here. The MGB on display has undergone a 12-month rebuild, and is now better than new. Here you find pictures of the restoration.

Motorbikes

Also on site were 2 motorbikes. One a 174 Laverda SF2 750 which has undergone a refresh to return it to the road, and one of their team members own 1917 Henderson Model G. The Henderson is used regularly on motoring events and recently completed a round trip of over 2000 km without a hiccup, over 10 days around the South Island of NZ.

Enjoy looking through the pictures. Hopefully, more and more events will take place again shortly!
