Workhorse wins at Salon Privé

It’s refreshing to note that you don’t need lizard skin upholstery and Libanese cedar wood door cappings with mother of pearl inlays to impress the judges at the current international concours’. Peter Heydon won the interior class at last weekend’s Salon Privé event at the manicured lawns of Syon Park with his 1941 Chrysler Town and Country ‘Barrelback’, displaying a plastic dashboard. Okay, plastic had a slightly different image back at the time and the use of it in the Barrelback is rather striking, but there was plenty of competition. Comtemporary reports describe the inside as ‘A pleasing combination of beauty and utility’ - nowadays, the art deco look is considered a prize winner. In fact the Town & Country wagon has been a bit of a concours favourite for some time. It must have helped prices going up as these cars don’t come cheap anymore.
